Shire Oak
Walsall Wood
Shire Oak bungalows are situated in a well established residential area. Both homes have been carefully structured and assessed by occupational therapists to ensure that the home is appropriately adapted for use by children people with disabilities. The homes are designed by reputable architects that have full knowledge into the regulations for children's homes, ensuring all specifications meet National Care Standards 2000.
Both bungalows have large grounds at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, lined with mature trees and shrubs providing full privacy in the leafy Walsall Wood area situated on the outskirts of Walsall Borough, bordering into Staffordshire and within commutable distance to the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
The area is predominantly residential with a well settled neighbourhood, accessible and within walking distance of Brownhills town centre close to recreational and leisure facilities, and a range of special schools within a five mile radius.
There is excellent access to public transport, linking into all surrounding areas e.g. Sutton Coldfield, Sandwell, Lichfield, Cannock, Tamworth, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
Oak Cottage
Oak Cottage is a dormer bungalow that has been specifically designed and adapted to accommodate up to five children and young people with complex learning and physical needs, aged from 12 to 18 years. Oak Cottage has wheelchair access to the front of the building with car parking. On the ground floor there is a large lounge and dining area, and bathroom which has been especially fitted with hi-tech bathing equipment, including hoisting and lifting aids for children with reduced mobility. There is a further wheelchair accessible shower and toilet, and a newly installed wet room adapted for wheelchair users. There are four large single bedrooms with wheelchair access, and on the first floor there is a further bedroom. The garden at Oak Cottage is specifically designed providing sensory and relaxing areas using water features, wind chimes, planting and a range of seating areas. The pathways provide easy walking or wheelchair accessibility for our children and young people to enjoy all year round. We encourage our young people to participate in our garden projects, thus creating and encouraging horticultural interests and visiting local plant nurseries.
Shire House
A small four-bedded purpose built residential unit specifically designed to meet the needs of severely disabled children. This small family type home situated to the rear of Oak Cottage is registered for four children, aged 5 to18 years.
Shire House is a bungalow having four en-suite bedrooms, three with wet rooms and one with a specialist spa bath, a large lounge and dining area with separate kitchen.
Due to the therapeutic nature of our work at the home, there is a specifically designed sensory and relaxation room for use by the children on a one to one basis. This enables staff to work with children who may have additional needs e.g. behaviour therapy, or stimulation for those with sensory needs etc. There are specialist qualified therapists linked to the homes, to support the development of the children. Our therapists work with each child on an individual basis.
The home has ramps for wheelchair access with appropriate railing to the front. At the rear there is a good-sized landscaped garden area specifically designed for relaxation. There are car parking facilities to the front of the home for staff and visitors.
Shire House is decorated to the highest specifications. All rooms are individually designed and decorated by our own designers, using bright bold colour schemes coordinated bedding and quality furniture that is safe and durable.
